i.    STUDY GROUPS & CLASSES

Study groups in Chinmaya Mission were started by Pujya Gurudev at the request of the attendees of His Jnana Yajnas to continue to imbibe the teachings of the scriptures even after the end of the yajna.

“Merely listening to my yajnas will not add to your beauty.  These ideas are reflected on deeply and digested slowly.  This process is hastened when you discuss what you have studied with others.  The ideas gathered by you, when discussed with others, not only become deeply rooted in you but, as they become clearer in your own concept, in your own understanding, they also inspire those who listen to you.  Thus each student, while trying to strengthen his own understanding, can become an instrument for the spread of this knowledge.  This process is the dynamic study scheme followed in the Vedantic tradition.  This is not a Chinmaya methodology.  It is the most ancient Vedantic tradition of study.” Swami Chinmayananda.

Pujya Gurudev thus called study groups “the Gurukula for the Grihasthas”: a place to deeply study our scriptures in a group to result in self-transformation & liberation, learn the art of right contact with the world and live a righteous life. The setting helps sustain motivation, discipline and becomes a support group as well.

Pujya Guruji, Swami Tejomayananda beautifully described the purpose of study groups: “We should be very clear in our minds that study groups are mainly for reflection (Mananam) and digestion of ideas.  Spiritual health is as important as physical health.  Just as a hospital helps me to regain my physical health, study groups serve in improvement of our spiritual health.”

Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda said: “Study groups constitute the heart of the Mission.”

Chinmaya Mission follows Bhagawan Adi Shankaracharyaji’s Advait Vedanta philosophy and has a prescribed study scheme for study groups.

ii.    JNANA YAGNA:

“Scriptural study convinces us of the higher values of life and when we live them we grow from within”- Swami Chinmayananda

Spearheaded by Swami Chinmayananda in 1951, Jnana Yagnas are lecture series by trained teachers, Swamiji’s and Swamini’s of Chinmaya Mission, based on our various scriptures, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads. They are held for 5-7 days lasting for 60-90 minutes every day. The purpose of Jnana Yagna is to kindle the interest of the listener to know more about the subject that motivates them to appreciate the rich culture and message of our Scriptures. Interspersed with thought provoking humor, our Swamijis make the subject palatable, enjoyable and easy to understand.

iii.    SUMMER FAMILY RETREAT:

"To relax ourselves for an hour in a quiet corner, and to compose ourselves to the serene silence within, is to open one's pores to the dynamic touch of creative life.... This is meditation - this is the highest form of prayer too".---Swami Chinmayananda.

Within the hustle and bustle of our daily life, it is very difficult to find an hour to relax and tune in to the silence within. Our annual family retreats are a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from the mundane and connect to the Higher. Satsangs, contemplative talks, meditation are designed to help the mind rise to the highest. Similar to when a ship is dry-docked for maintenance and repair, these annual retreats with our Swamijis give us the chance to fine tune our inner nature and recharge us to face the world outside. While adults are immersed in the Satsangs, contemplation and meditation, the children also have their share of enjoyment, under the complete supervision and guidance of our Sevaks & Sevikas.

iv.    WORKSHOPS & SEMINARS:

Multi speaker seminars on topics that are pertinent to the wellbeing of CMTC community are conducted along with speaker panel Q & A. Some of the topics include, “Ready for College?: Managing stress and navigating high school , Developing resilience in a stressful world, Interfaith”.

Interactive workshops led by Chinmaya Mission Swamins are held regularly on topics such as Meditation, Stress management etc. These seminars and workshops are open to greater Twin Cities community.
